Writing Workshop
Keepers of the Story:
Writing Your Family History with Purpose!
Workshop for turning family research into a story worth passing down.
You've gathered the names, the dates, the documents. But a family tree isn't the same as a family story. This workshop helps you bridge that gap — transforming scattered facts into a narrative that future generations will actually want to read.
Through guided discussion, hands-on exercises, and shared feedback, you'll learn how to:
-
Find the emotional through-line in your family's history
-
Turn dry records (census data, certificates, letters) into vivid scenes
-
Decide what to include, what to leave out, and how to handle the gaps
-
Give voice to ancestors you never met — responsibly and respectfully
-
Structure your story so it holds a reader's attention, not just a relative's obligation
This isn't a lecture — it's a working session. Bring a name, a document, or a half-finished draft, and leave with a clearer sense of direction and the tools to keep going.
Who it's for: Anyone with genealogical research (finished or in-progress) who wants to write it into something lasting — a memoir chapter, a family book, a letter to descendants, or simply a story worth telling well.
Format: Starting in January 2027: 1 hour, 3rd Wednesday of each month, discussion-based objectives, with writing exercises and peer reviews.
